A Bowen Therapy treatment, whether to address presenting pain, limitations in movement or to maintain a healthy body, is the very essence of simplicity. When we relieve pain and revive optimal wholeness in our bodies (the Soma), we have the potential to change our relationships and our lives.
Bowen Therapy has been named in honour of and to recognize the work of Thomas A. Bowen, Geelong, Victoria, Australia (1916-1982). It has been described as a neuromuscular somatic therapy. Bowen Therapy works with the soft tissue (fascia), musculature, skeletal structure and nervous system, is relatively gentle and highly effective. It began in the early 1950’s in Australia and arrived in Canada in the early 1990’s. Bowen Therapy is available worldwide with over 25,000 practitioners and growing. It can be highly effective on its own or strategically used in informed collaboration with other modalities.
Bowen Therapy is considered appropriate for anyone from pregnant women and newborn babies to the frail and the elderly. It can support recovery from many conditions, from acute traumatic or longstanding injury to chronic illness. It improves overall function and flexibility, balance, power, sporting performance and super-relaxation. Emotional, mood and mental well-being are common and highly appreciated side benefits.
Bowen Therapy prompts the restoration of skeletal alignment and can correct leg length discrepancies after falls and accidents without stretching or equipment. This gentle hands-on therapy reduces inflammation and releases tension in muscles and fascia (including scar tissue which is gently remediated (ask about MSTR) after impact injury or surgery). The body and its systems are guided into the Parasympathetic state resulting in a lowered heart rate and blood pressure. It promotes digestion, lymphatic function, enhances potential for reproduction, DNA Repair and support of healing and recovery from stress, trauma or injury. Bowen can unwind the overwhelmed state.
